I was born in Pretoria and went to Waterkloof Primary School from 1970 – 1976. I was head girl of the primary school and then went to Pretoria High School for Girls (1977 – 1981).

At High School I played 1st team Netball, 2nd team Hockey, was 1st team Tennis captain and a prefect in matric. I also play piano and completed the Grade VII exam. After matric I went to the University of Pretoria to study medicine from 1982 – 1987. I obtained my MBChB degree in 1987.

I married Dr Petrus Gouws on 6th December 1986 and did my internship at Kalafong Hospital in 1987 I spent 2 years (1988 – 1989) as a medical officer at the 1 Military Hospital – the first year in Internal medicine under Prof Zaidy and the second year in the Dept of Dermatology under Prof Heyl.

In 1990 I went to study Dermatology at the University of Pretoria under Prof Jacyk. In 1994 I qualified as a Dermatologist and my husband as an ophthalmologist. We spent 6 months in Nottingham, England and towards the end of 1995 another 6 months in Portland, America.

Since 1996 we have been living in Pretoria with our 3 sons.

Over the years I have done locum work at various Dermatology practices and I am an Associate in Dr Duvenage's practice since 2005.
